Q&A: Shane Mauss

I talked with comedian Shane Mauss about his career, his big ‘break’, and touring.

Q: When did you start performing comedy?

I was about 11 years old. I started young!

Q: Where do you draw your comedy from?

A lot of different places. My last album was all about my hiking accident, where I broke both my feet and spent time on crutches. I had to make some jokes about it!

Q: Do you have a favorite part of doing standup?

I like being in new places. But my favorite part is thinking about a new joke, and how the audience will react.

Q: Have you ever been heckled?

Of course. It doesn’t happen as much as people think. People are drunk, get a little chatty, and mouth off. For me, it’s more distracting than anything.

Q: You won Best Standup Comic at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival. Did that boost your confidence as a comedian?

Yes it did! That’s when I got a manager and an agent. The ‘Conan’ people were there. That led to my first appearance on his show.

Q: What is your ‘Here We Are’ podcast about?

Everywhere I go, I travel and look up universities in the area and I find professors to talk about the meaning of life and why we behave the way we do. Lots of psychology and mental science involved. It’s informative, but funny as well.

Q: How does it feel having your new comedy album hit #1 on iTunes?

It’s pretty amazing. Completely unexpected. I’m grateful that people are liking it. I’m happy that there was some silver lining to my hiking accident!
