Comedy Spotlight Q&A: Mike Storck

MikeStorck

I talked to local comedian Mike Storck about his experience in comedy, and his headlining gig this weekend at Magooby’s!

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a comedian?

Wasn’t until I was in my twenties. I bounced around from different jobs, but I remember one of those corny motivational posters that you see around. I thought about it for a couple. I figured since I loved writing funny stuff, I should pursue it full time.

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done in life?

Two years ago, I was riding my motorcycle, and hit a guard rail about five miles away from Magooby’s. I had a compound fracture..bone was sticking out of my leg. I called my girlfriend to get me to the hospital. I contemplated asking the comedy club if I could go on stage for a guest spot. If I could’ve snapped my leg in a motorcycle crash, and done five minutes of comedy on stage, I think I would’ve trumped any comics story.

Q: Favorite part of living in Baltimore?

Knowing that no matter where you go, you know it’s going to get better. You automatically have a certain amount of street cred wherever you go. I was doing a radio show in Vancouver once, and they were giving me directions. “Remember, lock your car, don’t leave anything out in the..oh wait. You’re from Baltimore. You’ll be fine!”

Q: Is anything off limits in your act?

No, not at all. I never set limits. There may be things I won’t joke about in certain situations, but I have no restrictions on myself. To inhibit the creative process on parameters set by other people can be a slippery slope. If you do that, you’re just hobbling yourself in the long run.

Q: As a comic, do you enjoy social media?

I wouldn’t say I enjoy it, but I utilize it. You can only look at angry posts for so long. I like the fact that social media has democratized the Entertainment industry in a way. It’s given people access to more people. It used to be you had to get on “The Tonight Show” or Comedy Central to be able to reach people. If that talent coordinator didn’t like you, you were screwed. With YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo..if you have good content, people will come. The down side obviously is that everyone gets a voice. It can be harder to stand out from the farting videos and kitty videos everywhere.

Q: Are you excited about your show this weekend at Magooby’s?

Nah, not really. ::laughs:: I’m looking forward to doing Magooby’s because it’s my hometown. I’ve been writing a lot of new material..wanted to come back with a fresh set!
