Laura Marie Rondinella will be portraying Tracy Turnblad in “Hairspray: In Concert!”

Q: Where were you born?

I was born in New Jersey, but later relocated to Philadelphia. I’ve taken a lot of acting and singing classes in New York over the years as well.

Q: What was your first acting gig?

The most exciting one that’s popping into my head right now is my eighth grade production on “Annie.” I had the lead role! That was my first REAL taste of musical theater.

Q: What was your reaction when you first landed the role of Tracy Turnblad in other incarnations of “Hairspray?”

I scored the role about four years ago. I had been auditioning constantly for a very long time. I was ECSTATIC. We had a great production team, and lots of talented actors from New York. I’ve continued to play Tracy since then!

Q: What is your favorite song from “Hairspray?”

It has to be “Good Morning, Baltimore.” I slightly prefer the slower reprise because it’s the one moment you see her down and connect with her the most.

Q: Are you like Tracy in any way?

Oh my god, YES! ::laughs:: I’m pretty much the real life, walking, talking Tracy. You have to look a certain way..not the typical leading lady. Tracy has a hard time being taken seriously, just like all of us ‘Tracy’s of the musical theater world.’

Q: What is the hardest part of doing this production?

There’s a little bit of extra pressure performing it in Baltimore. “Good Morning, Baltimore” is an anthem. Everyone will have high expectations. I’m feeling ALL the pressure, but it pushes me to do as much research as possible.

Q: Are you excited about performing “Hairspray” with the BSO?

Absolutely! They’re insanely talented. We were rehearsing the other day, and I was so distracted and mesmerized by them, I stopped in my tracks.
