Q: Is it true you self taught yourself the harmonica at age 16?

I did! It was one of those things that happened naturally. I was listening to a lot of Supertramp at that time. I started developing an ear it seemed after a while. I learned unconventionally off airplanes and air conditioners..it’s odd I know. I love it.

Q: If you could describe your time on “American Idol” in one word, what it would be and why?

“Life-changing” if that counts. ::laughs:: It’s changed a lot of lives. I went from playing small venues and roadhouses to performing in Indonesia.  It’s how quickly THAT happens when you win a show like that.

Q: What is your favorite part of performing live?

Making music with different musicians. I grew up playing The Grateful Dead, and the jam band scene. I love being able to to just jam and create music with different artists.

Q: Your new show “Slate Plate” premieres Friday. What is it about?

We go into each state and fill up a plate of food that is iconic to that state. So if we go to Maine, we’re doing lobsters. Illinois, Chicago style deep dish pizza.

I’m pretty sure you’ve had crab cakes for Maryland.

OH YES.

Q: If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I’d have to say turkey and dressing. I don’t get tired of it!

Q: How do you balance touring, filming the show, and recording new music..is it tough?

It is tough. You have to basically love what you do. It’s not really work to me because I love it.

Q: Are you excited about your show here in Annapolis on November 13th?

I LOVE Rams Head! One of the most iconic music rooms in the country. I’ve been privileged enough to play it in a few times in the last ten years. Whenever I tour, I try to make it a point to stop by!
