Q&A: Gianmarco Soresi

I chatted with comedian Gianmarco Soresi about his career and teeth whitener (lol)

Who is your favorite comedian and why?

Tovah Silbermann. Not too many know her stand-up work (she ended her performance career many years ago) but she could have easily been one of the GOATs (greatest of all time). I just find her background growing up in a Chabad community so fascinating and her perspective quite unique (and dark!!!!). I’m also a big Anthony Jeselnik stan if you’re looking for writing that’s equally as sharp but a little more light-hearted.

Is there a topic off limits in your act? If so, why?

This may not be a popular opinion among my colleagues, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to make jokes about the growing bald spot on the crown of my head. Nothing is off limits other than that.

Your debut on television was “Blue Bloods” playing Tom Selleck’s waiter. What was that experience like?

I asked Tom Selleck for a picture and he graciously said yes but they’ve never had me back on the show and I can’t help but wonder if that’s why. It’s nice to be on an episode that airs randomly a couple times a year because then I get random checks for vastly different sums of money and it helps reinforce my lack of financial planning.

Which is harder – stand up or acting and why?

Acting. Dramatic actors love saying stuff like “comedy is so much harder than tragedy!!!!” To which I ask you this, would you rather see Meryl Streep take a stab at a comedy special or Sophie’s Choice starring Jerry Seinfeld.

Why did you start your podcast, “The Downside?”

I saw that Joe Rogan sold his podcast to Spotify for like 100 million dollars and decided I’d also like 100 million dollars. So far I’ve lost about $8,000. I also had a friend (my co-host Russell Daniels) who can be tough to lock down for plans sometimes so I figured hey here’s a way he has to spend time with me.

Talk about this awesome teeth whitening commercial you were in years ago, that apparently is still airing

I’m glad you think it’s awesome! Sadly it was a predatory contract I signed when I was quite young giving them permission to air it as much as they want for 10 years straight. All I got paid was six months of tooth-whitening products. But that ten years is up this February so Crest if you’re reading this please reach out to my reps.
