I talked with comedian Dan St. Germain about his love of comedy and about headlining two shows here in Maryland
Q: Where did you grow up?
I grew up in North Jersey.
Q: Were you a funny kid, or did you grow into your comedy later in life?
I was a funny kid, but kids aren’t that funny. I did TONS of stupid shit. Every kid tries to be Chris Farley. I sure as hell thought I was. ::laughs::
Q: Do you remember your first stand up gig? How did it go?
I did it once in High School. It was..a nightmare. ::laughs:: It was more topical, and less jokes and bits.
Q: Who is your favorite comedian?
There are so many good comics out there. But I would have to say John Mulaney. His new special is incredible. He makes me feel like a fraud. ::laughs::
Q: What is your favorite part of doing stand up?
When a bit REALLY hits. It’s more of a relief. It’s validation.
Q: Where does your comedy come from?
Generally my personal life. I’ll throw in some political stuff here and there. I try to tailor the set to each audience. I wish there was a magic formula!
Q: What was your experience like on “At Midnight?”
That show is such a well oiled machine. I wish I would’ve hit the buzzer more, honestly. Comedy is pretty competitive, so I wish I had been more aggressive. It was a little nerve wracking as well. There are SO many talented writers over at that show.
Q: Do you prefer bigger crowds, or more intimate gatherings?
Dude, at this point I’ll take any crowd that likes me ::laughs:: I like bigger crowds, however it’s great actually seeing people’s reactions when you make them laugh. That’s why I’m doing what I’m doing.
Q: Are you excited about your two shows here in Maryland this weekend?
Yes! I’ve performed at Cellar Door before..they have great food, and it’s always fun. I haven’t played Roadie Joe’s yet, but I’m excited! I’m actually writing on a television show right now, so I don’t get to go out and headline as much. You don’t realize how much you miss it!
