I chatted with comedian Mark Normand about growing up in New Orleans, and his love for comedy.

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in New Orleans, right in Treme. I lead a crazy little life. I lost my virginity to a prostitute, and was a member of horrible street gang full of white kids.

Q: Where does your comedy come from?

Weird thoughts..inconsistencies I see around me. I don’t see color. I always tell people I’m black. Then they promptly yell at me. “NO YOU’RE NOT!”

 

Q: What is the hardest part of being a stand up comic?

Knowing you’re funnier than everyone in the room. I know everything about comedy. Just because THEY don’t get it, doesn’t mean I’m not funny. ::laughs::

 

Q: You’ve been featured on a few episodes of “Inside Amy Schumer.” What was that experience like?

Schumer is the best. She discovered me. She’ll throw me a bone anytime. I don’t know why, I’m the worst actor on the planet.It was cool to feel the cameras on you..I  just didn’t want to fuck it up. My scene was cut out of “Trainwreck.” I’m the only person in history to get cut out of a six hour Apatow flick.

 

Q: What is the craziest thing you’ve experienced as a stand up comic?

Aside form traveling the world, performing on the Middle East, or being on TV? Has to be being able live in Manhatten from telling jokes all night long. That’s how I pay my rent. I once got hired to roast a corporation. Someone gave me dirt on some of their employees. Went in guns blazing. “Bill cheated on his wife!” “Jeff is gay!” Everyone knew that Jeff was gay apparently, but they didn’t know about the cheating wife thing. The wife was there..and ran out in tears. I almost got my ass beat that night.

 

Q: As a comic, what makes YOU laugh?

The stupidest shit honestly. When people AREN’T trying to be funny. Like, a guy looking for his glasses, but they were on his shirt the whole time. That happened once, and I fucking died laughing. I could’ve helped him, but I didn’t.

 

Q: Are you excited about your shows here in Maryland?

Yeeaaahhh!! I’ve never been there before. Magooby’s is a great club with great history!
