Q&A: The Love Atomic

LoveAtomic

I chatted with Ryan Braunstein of The Love Atomic about his upbringing and his newly released song “Disconnect.”

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Monrovia, Maryland. Woods, country roads, and stuff like that. I spent the first 23 years of my life there.

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a musician?

I started playing guitar when I was ten years old. I was being taught by someone, who ended up telling me I could never be a musician. I was bummed. But I started teaching myself guitar again at age 16. I wanted to play in a band so bad, that I started a cover band. Looking back…we were so bad. ::laughs::

Q: Who influences you musically?

Vocally, I would say Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day. My guilty pleasure band is Owl City. Don’t judge me! ::laughs::

Q: What is your favorite song that you’ve written?

Aw man, they’re all like my kids. “Falling Stars” stands out because it’s the first song I engineered by myself. The version of the EP is actually the third version of the song. The first one was with a full band, and the second one included a few of my buddies. That whole process was a learning experience for sure. I consider it an accomplishment.

Q: What is the hardest part of the creative process? The most rewarding?

The hardest would have to be engineering. Certain sounds I can hear in my head, but sometimes can’t translate it.

The most rewarding has to be when I finally hear the finished product. It’s cathartic. It was difficult for me to put myself out there for a while.  Even if it’s a bad response, it’s huge knowing people listen to my stuff.

Q: So what is this I hear about you wanting to marry Katy Perry..?

I have a HUGE crush on Katy Perry..

Get in line.

I was trying to get someone to riff with me, and it just came out. I broke it out at an acoustic show, and came up with most of it on the spot. It was really fun.

Q: Are you excited about the release of your new song, “Disconnect?”

Yes! I’m super excited. This is my transition back into the music world. I was dealing with life, moving on…personal stuff for awhile. “Disconnect” is actually one of the first songs I wrote by myself. I listened to it again recently, and started working on it. Lots of people who have heard it acoustic told me they wanted it to be released. Hopefully other people will like it just as much.
