Q&A: Kimberly J Brown (“Halloweentown”)

kimberlyjbrown

I chatted with Actress and Gaithersburg native, Kimberly J Brown, about her classic Disney film series “Halloween Town” and her new children’s book!

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Gaithersburg.

Representin’

::laughs:: Exactly!

Q: Do you have any memories from growing up in Gaithersburg?

I don’t remember specifically, because I was so young. There were certain areas near I lived that were so serene. I love that whole country, green feel. Our family ritual was going to duck ponds in the area and playing with the baby chicks. I love being able to have a bat and  a ball, and not caring where the ball lands if that makes sense. In Los Angeles, you don’t have that luxury all the time.

Q: So I imagine you’re a big Redskins fan right..?

Yes, absolutely!

Q: Who is your favorite player and why?

kimberlyjbrown1

I can’t say that I have a favorite player. I don’t get to see every game due to being in Los Angeles. That’s what I love about technology now, I can follow along online. I do love a great Redskins football. And so does my family! It’s one of our favorite things to do.

Q: What was it like being on Broadway and “Guiding Light” at such a young age?

It was a blast for me. I did my first Broadway show when I was seven. I started “Guiding Light” when I was nine. Those experiences really showed me how much I really loved acting. I knew right then and there that’s what I wanted to do with my life.

Q: Do you remember anything from your audition for “Halloweentown?”

I do! I had to read a few times for them. One of the scenes I had to do was the scene before Marnie leaves the house, where she overhears she’s a witch. Little did I know what laid ahead of me!

Q: Do you have any fun memories from set?

halloweentown

Oh boy, do I. ::laughs:: Debbie Reynolds was such a bright light on set. She was always entertaining us kids, cracking jokes with the crew. The magic stuff was always fun to do because we didn’t see the special effects. We had to wait until the release. One specific memory is of the character Benny. The actor dubbed his lines after filming, so we actually worked with a robot. I’ll always remember the ‘errr err’ sound it made.

Q: If you could have one magical power, what would it be and why?

Ohhh that’s a good question. Only one? I always say to my sister that I wish I could have the power to fly or teleport myself.  I would love to just hop over to her to have a drink or watch a game or something. Just snap my fingers, and BAM!

You would save TONS on airfare and Uber charges.

Oh yes. The gas companies might not like that though..

Q: Would you consider doing another “Halloweentown” film with Marnie all grown up?

I’m so open to that. I get asked that a lot, which is so flattering. I’m proud that the fans still watch the films, and still ask me about them.

Q: What is your book “Poppins Pumpkin Patch Parade” about?

It’s about a magical pumpkin patch, where the creatures and things come alive on Halloween. It’s about Pumpky, her twin hay bale buddies Huh and Hay, and Houdini the Zucchini who try to solve a mystery to save the Halloween parade for Prince and Princess Poppin.

Q: Are you excited about your appearance in Maryland this weekend?

I’m THRILLED. Not only to be promoting the book and meeting fans, but to come back to my home state and say Hi to everybody while I’m there.
