I chatted with the guys of Cassio Monroe about their influences, and being a part of the Orioles playoff run last year!
Q: Where are you guys from?
Tripp: I’m from Nashville
Jeff: Michigan
Q: How did Cassio Monroe form?
Tripp: Ahh, the genesis. I had been looking for a partner in crime musically. I was a white rapper in Nashville..that’s NOT common in this town ::laughs:: I had seen Jeff play a few open mic nights and fell in love with his voice and songs.
Jeff: I had chatted with Tripp’s buddy that evening, and got a call from Tripp randomly. I completely forgot who he was.
Tripp: We met up and were both energized. We wrote five song titles that day, and started writing the next day.
Jeff: We didn’t plan on writing all those songs that first day. It was “love at first write.”
Q: Who are your musical influences?
Jeff: Our fans. It’s inspiring to see how our songs fit into peoples lives. The second we write a song, it’s not really ours. It’s someones sports anthem..someone’s graduation song.
Musically for me, Amy Winehouse is my favorite vocalist. Justin Timberlake is up there. I grew up on Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beatles, Blink 182, Green Day
Tripp: We have a venn diagram when it comes to music. A lot of it is in the middle. I grew up on Hip Hop, lots of 70’s and 80’s music. Phil Collins, Genesis, Duran Duran..anything with a very established groove.
Q: How did it feel having your song “Under The Lights” as the Orioles anthem last season?
Jeff: That was pretty awesome. A childhood friend works for Under Armour in Baltimore. He was at one of the games, and called me freaking out that they used our song in a lip sync video. We felt VERY honored.
Tripp: I grew up a die hard baseball fan. When the video came out, I found out that Caleb Joseph played baseball with my brother in Nashville. Surreal!
When the Orioles clinched the AL East, they played that song for a literal hour in the ballpark.
Tripp: Oh yes, we remember. We were getting tweets for hours. Even a few bands we know were texting us about it ::laughs::
Are you excited about your new single “No Guts No Glory?”
Tripp: We couldn’t be more excited. We had tons of fun working on it. Some songs write themselves..some songs you have to dig a little bit deeper. I love working on those types of songs.
Jeff: We’re fishes out of water when we’re not making music. We can breathe again. I can’t wait to see what people think!
Tripp: Jeff and I write about our lives. We try and pick things that inspire us and put them in a place that feels exciting and fresh.
