I chatted with local chef Scott Hines about his experience on “Guys Grocery Games” and what he loves to prepare! He has been a chef for many years, perfecting his skills in many different restaurants. He is thinking about opening a restaurant of his own but he is still in the researching stage to see if it is possible. He says that he needs to look into things like the cost of the kitchen equipment from Nella Toronto and the price of renting a facility that would be able to house both the kitchen and seating area. While it’s always been his dream to own his own restaurant, that seems to be a few years down the line yet! For now, he is just basking in the success of his recent TV appearance.
Q: When did you know you wanted to become a professional chef?
I’ve always enjoyed cooking, even when I was younger. I didn’t get serious about it until about five or six years ago.
Q: What is your favorite dish to cook?
Has to be comfort food. It doesn’t have to always be fancy. However, in the restaurant I try to do a variety of things.
Q: You appeared on, and won “Guys Grocery Games.” What was that experience like?
It was insanely cool. I got to meet Guy, and a lot of really cool people. Being in the store was great. A HUGE bonus to actually win!
Q: What was your biggest challenge on the show?
Being unfamiliar with the space. Having all the lights on you, and having everyone staring at you as well. The time constraints on each challenge were brutal!
Q: How did it feel winning $14,000
It was a BIG help to my family. We put some away for the kids. I also treated the wife to something nice! ::laughs::
Q: What is the most challenging thing about being a chef?
The time away from home. I love what I do, and have a great time, but I work long hours. Challenges come with any responsibility.
Scott is the Executive Sous Chef at B&O American Brasserie!
