Q&A: ABC 2’s Megan Knight

I chatted with ABC 2’s Megan Knight about her time at the station and the upcoming Fashion Rocks Autism event.

Talk about your childhood, where you grew up, etc

I was born and raised in Ellicott City, Maryland. I went to Mt. Hebron High School. For college, I went to Syracuse where I received my degree in broadcast journalism.

What inspired you to become a journalist?

I always say my parents. They are the biggest news junkies I know. Every night at six thirty, they sit down with their cocktails and watch the news. Most people get their news online now, but nope..not my parents. I remember growing up watching ABC 2’s morning news instead of cartoons or whatever other kids were watching. It was instilled in me at an early age. I loved to write growing up, so they encouraged me to go into journalism. I took a television class in high school that set me up for college.

How does it feel being able to work at the same station you grew up watching?

Oh my goodness! I remember the first time I walked into ABC 2 as an employee..it was SO surreal. As a college intern, you don’t think anything like that will ever happen. Jamie Costello, who I idolized growing up, is now my co-worker..WHAATT?! ::both laugh:: It’s so cool.

You came back to Baltimore in 2012. What was it like going from producer to on air reporter?

I was at a small station in New York before I came back home. Typically at smaller stations, you do a little bit of everything. I produced, was an on air reporter, and even anchored the morning show for a few years. I knew the producer route would be easier to get back into when i wanted to move closer to home.  Kelly Groft knew I wanted to get back into the reporter role, so when a position was vacant, she was very open to the idea. I thank her for that!

What is it like working with such a great news team in the morning?

They’re the ONLY reason I get up in the middle of the night. ::both laugh:: Getting up at 1:30am SUCKS, but when you’re working with such a great crew, it makes up for it. There’s so much friendship, camaraderie but more importantly, we’re a TEAM. We’re going to have a pot luck tomorrow morning..needless to say we LOVE to eat during our shifts. Have you seen our food tweets?

Oh yes! ::both laugh::

We’re having turkey, yams..I’m making a sweet potato casserole. We’re one big dysfunctional family that likes to eat and have a good time.

That was the BEST segway EVER.

Thank you ::laughs::

You’ve been doing the Taste Buds blog as well, correct?

Yes! We’ve been doing that for a few years now. That’s ton of fun to do. It’s gotten me out and about meeting different food bloggers. I didn’t know much about blogging before, so it’s definitely giving me a lot of insight. It’s been really awesome.

What is your favorite food to cook?

::gasps:: Nick, that is NOT nice to ask. This MIGHT be a little bit of a cop out, but I love trying new things. When I’m bored, I email myself recipes to prepare. I don’t think I’ve ever cooked something twice. Fortunately, my family and friends are willing to try what I cook. They’re probably lying to me most of the time about liking it, but it’s fun. I love to bake and cook, so it’s hard to say what my favorite thing is to cook. But I will say I’ll eat crab cakes every day. Hands down my favorite food to eat.

Now I’m hungry. ::both laugh::

How tough is it getting up at an un-Godly hour everyday?

Ugh..Nick if someone ever tells you that getting up that early for the AM news shift gets easier, they’re lying to you. It’s NOT true. ::laughs:: I’ve been getting up at this time for about eight years now. Whether it’s eleven to seven, or three to eleven,I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment. I have a cold currently so it’s pretty hard to get out of bed, BUT it is my job. So you just kind of have to do it.

What does Fashion Rocks Autism shine a light on?

It all benefits the non-profit Safe Minds. Safe Minds is an autism advocacy group. I hadn’t heard about this until a friend of mine got my involved in it last year. They shine a light on autism research on the local AND national front. They’re working their butts off. I’m very honored to be a part of this fashion show.

As someone whose from Maryland, what does it mean to you to be able to help in promoting local causes?

It means everything. This is where I call home. As public figures, we should always go out into the communities and see who is helping make them better. For me, I feel like I’m becoming a better person helping to raise money for causes or even just reporting on them and give them airtime.

Are you excited about Fashion Rocks Autism this Monday?

Soooo excited! I know I’m not going to get any sleep between Monday and Tuesday, but it’s going to be off the hook. They’re having live auctions, silent auctions, food, a great band in High Voltage. I’m excited to show off clothes for Kelsey’s Kloset in Laurel. I would buy EVERYTHING in her store if I could. It’s going to be a fun filled evening, but you’ll also get a great education on autism and Safein
