I chatted with Chris from Old Cross about songwriting during lockdown and their new album!
Why did you name the band Old Cross?
Back in my hometown, I lost one of my best friends in an automobile accident. Don’t you know the crosses you put on the side of the road where someone has passed? That was such an intense experience. We were going to name a song ‘Old Cross’ but we ultimately decided to use it as our band name.
How have you handled lockdown?
We had this new record done by April/May. We thought we were going to be able to tour in some capacity. I’ve also been demoing new songs for a new album. So, music is the short answer ::laughs::
What is it like putting out an album during a once in a lifetime global pandemic?
Oh man, it’s definitely a bummer that we can’t get out there in different cities. We LOVE playing live. We’ve jammed a few times and the songs are awesome live. We’ve been working on live streaming at a higher quality of audio and video.
What’s the hardest part about being in a band?
Trying to vibe with the right people. I’ve never been in a band where we gel so well like us three do.
If you could collaborate with any artist or band, who would it be and why?
Propaghandi for sure. I love the way they write..their wording is very original.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done in life?
There’s definitely random drunken stuff I did as a teenager..
Please don’t get yourself in trouble with the law..
I would say pickup and move from my hometown when I was 22. My girlfriend and I decided to move to Denver. At the time I was uncertain about it but it turned out for the best.
What is your favorite song off the new album and why?
“Hang man” I love the lyrical content. I tend to hide things with metaphors but I didn’t do that this time. It’s about mental health and people being there for you.
How important has it been for you taking care of your mental health during the pandemic?
I don’t think it’s ever a good thing to dwell..but it’s easier said than done. So you really have to work on it..day by day..baby steps. During the pandemic, I’ve had pretty bad luck. I lost my dad a couple of months ago. Either I was going to be fully depressed or you’re going to have to overcome this and be positive. I’ve done a pretty good job with that with the folks around me.
Are you excited about the release of your new album?
Oh yeah! We’ve been sitting on this for a while. Every time I listen to it, I enjoy it, so I think that’s a good thing. We’re loving creating new music videos every so often for the tracks as well.
