I chatted with Laine Hardy about his experience on “American Idol” and what he’s been up to since lockdown

When did you know you wanted to be a musician?

I’m not sure if you’ve heard the story, but hearing Elvis for the first time ignited something in me.  To some degree, It’s the only thing I’ve wanted to be. It’s all I know how to do.

Who inspires you, musically AND personally

Simply put, Home. If you’re around me longer than 10 minutes you’ll hear all about it.  Home is my family and friends.  It’s being on the river while the sun is going down. It’s just Louisiana with the food, music, and the people.  You should come visit.

What is your favorite song of all time (not yours) and why?

“If I Can Dream” by Elvis from his ’68 Comeback TV Special.  He was wearing that awesome white suit. The strings and the horns come in.  I want those one day.

What was it like singing your song “Ground I Grew Up On” with a fan recently on Zoom?

I’m always following the comments and videos on socials.  I love how supportive everyone is.  When I saw Lilly waiting for the release of “Ground”, I knew I wanted to reach out.  I can’t wait to meet her and her family for a live show soon.  Who knows, maybe she’ll come up on stage with me.

How did it feel coming back to “American Idol” in the next season and winning?

What I still feel, Shocked.  It was so unexpected.  It feels like I went to ride a roller coaster with a friend and I’ve not gotten off.

What advice from the judges has stuck with you?

Funny enough, One things that stuck was from Bobby.  I had a song where I wasn’t holding a guitar.  It was like the scene in Talladega Nights where Ricky Bobby didn’t know what to do with his hands.  Bobby calmed me down and told me to keep my elbows tight by my side.  It worked.  I didn’t wave them too much.

What was it like entertaining troops overseas

It was one of the greatest opportunities of my life.  I can’t wait to do more. It’s the least I can do.

How bad did you miss performing live for an audience this past year?

Real Bad.  I was always wanting to be on the road and on that stage playing for my fans

Are you excited for your upcoming show in Annapolis?

Oh Yeah! It was a sell-out last time, so we are doing two days in a row this time.  We’re actually doing our off days there.  What should we do?
