I chatted with musician Steve Dorff about his career and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Talk about your childhood, where you grew up, etc
I grew up in NYC…..Was always quite Musical as I heard an imaginary orchestra in my head as far back as I can remember…..underscoring everything I did in my life. I remember my friend hitting a homerun in a little league game, the whole crowd cheering while I was musicalizing in my head the entire event. I listened to every record I could get my hands on, memorizing every song and listening intently to what every instrument in the band was playing. I taught myself the piano starting at age 4.
When did you know you wanted to be a musician? When did you begin to write music?
It was obvious to my parents and my family that I was musically inclined at a very young age…….I started writing music in my head as far back as I can remember, underscoring musically everything I did…….Started writing songs at age 12
Out of all the songs you’ve written/composed, which is your favorite and why?
That’s like asking “Who’s your favorite child”? They are all favorites in some way or another….Certainly I have the one’s that I believe are “My Best Work”…..Thery are not necessarily my biggest hits.
What was going through mind when you found out you would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame?
Being inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2018 was beyond every dream come true for a songwriter. To have my name listed with my heroes…….Lennon and McCartney, Billy Joel, Burt Bacharach, Elton John and countless others is still a” pinch me moment”.
What is the key to having a hit song?
I think what makes a hit song is a “Can’t get it out of your head” melody, and a great story lyrically that becomes universally relevant to any listener.
What is the key to longevity?
Obviously having the talent, perseverance, and being able to pick yourself up and dust yourself off many times per week from rejection….and keep moving forward.
Why did you decide to write your book “I Wrote That One Too?” What has been the response?
I was asked by a literary agent to document my stories and 10 months later, after having thought about all the amazing Artists I have gotten to work with….I had a book. It was a very cathartic experience and I have been overwhelmed by the great response I’ve gotten from fans and colleagues.
Are you excited about your upcoming show in Maryland?
I’m very excited to come back to Maryland….Not many people realize I spent my senior year of High School in Baltimore and lived there for 2 years before heading off to college. I still have lot’s of friends in the area…..Looking forward to seeing them!!!
