I chatted with actress Leandra Ellis-Gaston about her Broadway career and bringing “Some Like It Hot” to Baltimore
Talk about your background, where you grew up, etc
I was born in Columbia, South Carolina. I was lucky enough to be able to do a lot community theater there. I did my first musical when I was in fifth grade. I played Miss Hannigan in “Annie.” I was also in band, chorus; I was really musical.
What was it like playing Miss Hannigan?
As a fifth grader, it was so bizarre. I tried to put a little bit of all my teachers into that role ::laughs:: I caught the bug that day. After the first show, all I wanted was an apple. I was starving! It was time for the curtain call and I hid the apple behind me and all these people were screaming and clapping for me. I’ve NEVER heard people scream for me like that. I remember saying to myself “You have a gift, little girl.”
Some of your other credits include “SIX” and “Tina: The Musical.” I read that you played a lot of the female parts in “Tina.” What was it like that first time, as Tina Turner, coming down the stairs at the end of the show?
Oh my goodness! It was…so CRAZY. It was so surreal. It happened after COVID, so to think that we were even on a stage again was crazy. During COVID, I continued to work as hard as possible to come down those stairs in four inch Stilettos, coming down sixteen steps. I remember standing there and just taking it all in. It’s one thing when the audience and family and friends are clapping for you. But to have your company standing there, cheering for you with tears in their eyes..it’s the best feeling ever. It was a long journey to get to that first bow.
I’ve seen “Tina” and it’s dazzling and manic; but I mean that in a good way. What is your favorite song from that show to perform?
Hmm. That’s tough. One of my favorites was “Better Be Good.” It’s in Act 1. That show was such a whirlwind. I loved getting to do “Proud Mary” as well. It was so fun to dance with those girls. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
What is your typical show day like?
I tend to try and stay in bed as long as possible. I go to the gym and steam these chords as much as possible. Especially with the allergies right now. I like to write a little bit and talk to some friends. Then I go to the stage and stretch out. I try not to do a lot of talking during the day.
What is it like being able to travel around the country?
It is incredible. It feels so good to see so many places for free. It’s fun to bring the story around the world. I’m excited to see how the story inspires people.
“Some Like It Hot” is based off the film with the same name. What was your reaction when you landed the role of Sugar Cane?
I was SO excited. I get to re-imagine this role that was created by Marilyn Monroe, I get to sing these amazing songs AND I get to tap dance. I get to do everything I love to do all in one show. I’m extremely thankful.
For the few people that haven’t seen the movie, what is “Some Like It Hot” about?
It’s about two best friends who get into a sticky situation. They witness a mob hit and have to join a all girl group in disguise. One of them finds out who they are and the other falls in love.
Are you excited bringing “Some Like It Hot” to Baltimore?
I’m SO excited. I think Baltimore is going to love getting some heat…
