“300 Letters”
Directed by: Lucas Santa Ana
Starring: Cristian Mariani, Gaston Frias, Bruno Giganti, Jorje Thefs
Plot: “300 Letters” follows Jero and Tom, a young gay couple that everyone wants to be. On the day of the first anniversary of their meeting, Jero returns home to find that Tom has abandoned him, leaving him a box of 300 letters as his only explanation.
Review:
The film starts out as your typical rom com..until it’s not. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Anti-Rom Com before. But here we are!
Jero thinks everyone is going great between him and Tom but he receives a box with, you guessed it, 300 letters in it. The movie goes back and forth brilliantly between vignettes of a depressed and confused Jero to “happier times” when he was with Tom.
The tell of a true actor is whether they can make you hate them. Gaston Frias succeeds in that area as Tom. Each time Jero opens a letter I cringe because it reveals how much more of an asshole Tom was to him.
I have to say it’s refreshing being sent Gay cinema in the Fall and not just during Pride month. There’s been a lack of truly great LGBTQ cinema lately. But this FINALLY breaks that streak.
*** out of *****
