I talked to “American Idol” contestant, Rayvon Owen, about his experience on the show, and his excitement for the Idols Live Tour.
Q: Who are your musical influences?
I pull from a lot of genres, and different time periods. Luther Vandross, John Legend, Sam Smith..just to name a few.
Q: What is your favorite song of all time?
“Overjoyed” by Stevie Wonder. It’s so creative, and so beautifully written.
Q: Were you nervous trying out for “American Idol?”
A little bit. Naturally as a singer, you put yourself out there, hoping they like what they see. It’s more of an excitement thing. Your heart beats a ltitle faster. Especially when you’re in front of cameras, lights, and judges. You’re a little bit out of your element. It’s like walking into the unknown.
Q: Who was your favorite judge and why?
They’re all amazing. I would have to say Harry Connick Jr, because his musical background is so extensive. I love that he’s about giving you applicable advice. He and I talked a lot after the show was over. He’s so encouraging. He thinks there’s a place in this industry for me.
Q: What was your favorite performance on “American Idol?”
“Believe” by Justin Bieber. It was one of my most honest performances. It went over well because it was something I truly related to. I used the national platform to say ‘Thank You.’ I dedicated it to my mom. I forgot about the cameras and the lights, and just went for it. I truly wanted to inspire others with that performance.
Q: How did it feel being saved four times by fans via Twitter?
::laughs:: It was really cool. It was unfortunate that I was in the bottom so many times, but I was grateful to be in the competition another week. It was cool to know people were pulling for me. People saw..something in me. I was hanging out with a friend last night actually, and he said “I thought you were good, but when you would sing for your life, I saw the fight in you. I guess it brought some extra oompf out of me!
Q: What was it like performing with Jamie Foxx on the finale?
Oh my god. That was one of my favorite moments. He is, as we all know, so multi-talented. That song was beautiful. I can personally relate to it. He’s a very encouraging, funny guy.
Q: Are you excited about the Idols Live Tour?
Yes. Absolutely! We get to sing our songs, and go across America, for fans and supporters who voted for us, and believed in us. Voting for us also helps our career. We don’t necessarily have to win. I want to connect with those people face to face and say ‘Thank You.’
Q: If you could describe your journey so far in one word, what would it be?
That’s a tough question. I haven’t gotten that one yet. Hmm..Growth. I grew in every way.
