I talked with Cirque Du Soleil’s Paul Bannerman, about his career and the iconic show swooping into Baltimore.
Q: Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Brussels, Belgium. I lived there for 18 years.
Q: When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
I would say it was in Grade 6 at my English school. I chose music as an elective, and I fell in love with it.
Q: What is your favorite part of touring the world?
It has to be experiencing different cultures all year round. I love exploring new lands and towns. I’m an avid photographer, so I love road trips. Admittedly, another great part is all the different foods we can eat!
Q: Is there a negative side of touring the world?
For me, no. I’ve learn to adapt to that style of living. I’ve gotten used to compromising certain things, to be able to do what I love. I go with the flow.
Q; Do you have a favorite city that you’ve performed in?
Besides Baltimore, it has be Seville, Spain. The audience and their applause was just..special. I’ve never heard an audience as enthusiastic as they were.
Q: Never missing a tour stop is impressive. What is your favorite part of Varekai?
My favorite part is the traveling. However, as a musician, your goal is to play the best show you can every night. I have to be there for the acrobats, and follow their cues. For me, it’s about reacting to what’s going on stage.
Q: Are you excited to bring the magical world of Varekai to Baltimore?
Absolutely! It’s been about ten years since Varekai was in Baltimore. Hopefully people come out and check out the show. There are a lot of differences in the show since last time. The arena setting is best for this show..it’s exciting!
Cirque Du Soleil: Varekai will be performed at Royal Farms Arena in Downtown Baltimore starting July 8th. Buy tickets
