I chatted with Ryan Bingham about his music and winning an Academy Award.
Q: Growing up, who were some of your musical influences?
Guy Clark, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones..a mixed bag of stuff.
Q: Do you have a favorite venue that you’ve performed in?
I don’t really have a favorite one. There are good ones all over the country..hard to pin just one down.
Q: What is your favorite song to perform?
“Sunshine.” I love playing this one live with the band. It’s one of the more heavy rock and roll songs of mine.
Q: What is your favorite part of performing live?
It has to be the connection..or energy..whatever it is..that you have with the audience. What’s cool is that each one is different.
Q: If you could listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“Hard Rain” by Bob Dylan.
Q: You won a Golden Globe, Grammy, and an Oscar for “The Weary Kind.” Was it gratifying as a songwriter?
It was strange..an honor..surreal..an incredible feat. I never thought about that in my wildest dreams. Going into writing the song, I didn’t have that as a goal. It was a pretty wild time in my life ::laughs::
Q: What is your song “Broken Heart Tattoo” about?
Ah yes. It’s about my little girl… who’s crying right now in the other room ::laughs:: I started writing it when I found out my wife was pregnant. The song is about what I would say to my unborn child as they are growing up.
