Q&A: Jared Freid

I chatted with comedian Jared Freid about his “love” of “The Bachelor” franchise and how he managed lockdown.

When did you know you wanted to be a comedian?

When I got out of college, I was cold calling and trying to figure out my life. I’m going to date myself, but it was when folks would send group emails, before group texts, and talk about weekend plans. It was the best thing in the world making jokes with my friends. Sometimes people would email directly outside of the group and say “I’m laughing hysterically at my desk” and that was the best feeling in the world. I had to figure out how to inject that into my daily life. Maybe do some open mic, an improve or sketch class..things like that.

Who is your favorite comedian and why?

Kevin James. “Sweat The Small Stuff” is probably thirty years old. I could watch it over and over again. The bits still stick. I love the physical comedy.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done in life?

Becoming  a standup comedian.

How much joy do you get recapping “The Bachelorette” on your YouTube and social media accounts?

I love, LOVE, reality shows. I love taking them too seriously. I like putting yourself into the position of those in the show and how I would react. I think it’s easy to look at “The Bachelor” franchise and say it’s stupid, because it is. Thirty women for one man; thirty men for one woman. It’s the small moments.

Your owl bit had me roaring.

Would you ever appear on either show yourself?

I would love to host the show. If I hosted the show, I would be more like Jeff Probst from “Survivor.” He doesn’t just ask questions, he’ll ask follow up questions. I would be a much, much more hands on host than any “Bachelor” franchise host.

What dating advice would you give your audience?

Stick to your standards. It’s the only way to go. You have to be a little selfish and know what YOU want. What are the things you want? Just a date? It’s a totally reasonable thing to want. If you just want to go for drinks, and someone won’t, it’s easy to just let them go.

How did you manage lockdown?

I went from someone who posts daily to someone posting waayy too much. I was concentrating on being the most annoying person on the internet. If people liked my party, they stayed and danced, but if they didn’t, they got the hell out of there.

You host the J-Train Podcast. What do you discuss on there?

We take email from listeners and give advice. It could be dating issues, lifestyle issues, etc. It fits the demo that really tunes in.

I read that you’re a huge Patriots/NFL fan. Any thoughts on the upcoming season?

I’m excited for the season! Last year was Tom Brady’s turn to show the world he’s the best of all time. Now it’s Bill Belichick’s turn. He gets back all of the players that opted out of last season due to Covid. It’s the biggest privilege to get tired of winning and that’s where I was as a Patriot’s fan. Now it’s more interesting to find out what this team will be.

Are you excited to get back on the road and headline Magooby’s?

I CANNOT WAIT. People are ready to hear reasonable people talk. The extremes have taken over the airwaves. A comedy club is where you can have a reasonable conversation about some extreme subjects and have fun with it. A comedians job isn’t to take sides but to point out the house is on fire and here’s how I think the fire started.
