“Just The Two Of Us”
Directed by: Valérie Donzelli
Starring: Virginie Efira, Melvil Poupaud, Dominique Reymond, Marie Rivière
Review:
Okay, don’t freak out. It’s in French.
The movie is about a woman, Blanche, who goes out with her identical twin sister, Rose, and meets Gregoire who sweeps her off her feet. Fast forward and they have two adorable kids and a seemingly perfect life.
It’s clear right away Gregoire is not a good guy. You don’t get to see Gregoire evolve into that controlling sociopath slowly. Nothing takes you by surprise…he just..is. And I think that’s one of my problems with the film. Poupaud does a great job, but it’s basically one note the entire time. Virginia Efira is the clear stand out here. She gives a brilliant performance from start to finish. Blanche is much more layered as wife, mom, victim, survivor.
Some of the more harrowing scenes happen in the second part of the film. Some were honestly hard to watch. The script is VERY well written, even though it leans in sometimes to the tropes of the genre.
Even though I had a few small problems with the movie, it’s still a taut, sexy, thriller. Highly recommended!
