“A Little Prayer”
Directed by: Angus McLachlan
Starring: David Strathairn, Jane Levy, Will Pullen, Celia Weston, Dascha Polanco, and Anna Camp
Review:
The first thing that attracted me to this film is the cast. David Strathairn is an Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning Actor. Jane Levy is ‘Zoey’ from “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and “Don’t Breathe.” Celia Weston has been in sooo many films and television shows. And any millenial like myself will know Anna Camp and Dascha Polanco.
Empty-nesters Bill (Strathairn) and Vernida (Weston) suddenly have a full nest, Their son, David (Pullen), lives in the guest house with his wife, Tammy (Levy). Their daughter, Patti (Camp), shows up with their grandchild. We soon discover Tammy is pregnant AND that Davis is having an affair with his receptionist. There’s a poignant scene where Bill confronts David and Pullen shows his dramatic acting chops. In the same split second, I was furious with him, but then absolutely heartbroken for him.
I knew Jane Levy had comedic chops, but there’s a moment in the latter part of the film where she is simply stunning dramtically. The way the camera is around her and stays with her is so poignant and a true testament to the actor, director, and cinematographer. For me, Celia Weston is the gentle giant of the film. She delivers some heavy lines and emotions, but also some truly subtle laugh out loud moments. And yes. I actually laughed out loud.
For a drama, the film never bogs you down with emotions. The intensity is just enough to illicit your response and make you feel for each character in the moment. It’s a perfect Sunday evening watch.
