“Naked Ambition”
Directed by: Dennis Scholl and Kareem Tabsch
Review:
This documentary follows the storied life of photographer Bunny Yeager. At that time, there were virtually no female photographers in the pinup business. But Yeager’s photographers were captivating audiences all over the world. She was able to capture sexiness and empowerment all in one frame.
Visually, the film is stunning, enriched by the vibrant aesthetic of Yeager’s original photography. The use of her body of work as visual punctuation throughout the documentary helps to underscore her unique artistic vision and influence on modern visual culture. She launched the career of Bettie Paige with the infamous jungle themed photo shoot and then photographed her with nothing but a Santa hat and a smile.
The commentators such as Dita Von Teese, Larry King, and Hugh Hefner offer great insight into the world of Bunny and how she essentially changed the medium. We also hear from Bunny’s two daughters, who are on opposite sides of her legacy. One praises it, while the other isn’t flattered by the photos she took.
The documentary is a beautiful portrait of how art, sexuality, and empowerment intersect. I had no idea who Bunny Yeager was when I pressed PLAY. But I’m glad I watched as I now know a little bit about an unsung pioneer in the Entertainment world.
