Q&A: Marcus Phillips

I chatted with Marcus Phillips about his role in “Kimberly Akimbo” and his love for the film “Jumper”

Talk about your background

I’m originally from the small town of Hickory, North Carolina. It’s about an hour south of Charlotte. I’ve been dancing around life since I was little. I grew up in the church where my parents were worship leaders. I started doing community theater around the area as well. Our High School didn’t really have a theater program, but we put on a few shows here and there.

What was your first professional job on stage?

I toured with “Prom.” I came after it hit Baltimore last time. That was amazing. I auditioned and two weeks later I was rehearsing. I was going into my junior year of College at that point.

What has it been like traveling around the country?

It’s been great. I’ve been doing it for the past few years. I’ve been able to go to a lot of cities you wouldn’t vacation too. They have a lot of charm. I’m a runner and get to see all these different areas and beautiful theaters. I have a partner back home and it’s hard being away from family. But it’s rewarding.

If you have free time on the tour, what is your one go to activity?

I LOVE movies. Right after the show, I’ll try and catch the last showing of the night of something at the closest theater.

What is your favorite film of all time and why?

All time? Nick!? Do YOU have a favorite?

The original “Halloween.”

Oh okay! That’s a good one. I’m going to say “Jumper” from 2008.

Yeah I love that one!

It should’ve gotten a sequel. If they ever do a reboot I have to be in it. I love everything about it. I love the idea of being able to just teleport wherever I want whenever I want.

What is “Kimberly Akimbo” about?

“Kimberly Akimbo” tells the story of 16 year old Kimberly who lives in New Jersey. She’s a lot different from the other kids because she has a disease that makes her age four times as fast as everyone else. I always tell people it’s like Benjamin Button but in reverse. It’s a musical comedy and it chronicles her life, her family, and her friends. I play Seth in the show. I would say he’s her first friend. He’s a misfit of sorts in the school as well. He doesn’t turn a blind eye to her and leans into her flaws. He doesn’t see her as a disease ridden person who he has to stay away from. He goes on a beautiful journey with her.

What is your favorite musical and why?

I didn’t see it live because I was too young but I saw it filmed later on. It’s called “Passing Strange.” I love the main characters journey and it was very experimental. It has a really grounded and relatable story about a young person finding their way and even falsehoods of their lives. It’s a really great show.

If you had one super power what would it be and why?

Teleportation!

Back to “Jumper” I see

Right! I would love to be able teleport parts of my body. Like teleport my eye to the airport to see if my plane was taking off on time. I feel like you can do so much with this power, like gliding in the sky.

Are you excited to bring “Kimberly Akimbo” to Baltimore?

I’ve never been to Baltimore so I’m really excited. I think the audiences will love this show. The show can get deep but it’s hilarious. They will just laugh their socks off.
