Press Release: The Last Year Supports Neon Hitch On Fall tour

The Last Year

THE LAST YEAR SUPPORTS BRITISH POP SENSATION NEON HITCH ON FALL TOUR
(Baltimore, MD) – Talk about girl power! Two of the music industry’s fiercest female artists – Niki Barr and her band The Last Year and Neon Hitch – are heading out for a fall tour that will take them from New York to North Carolina for a series of dates that kick off at The Knitting Factory in New York on October 26 and ends with a grand finale concert at the iconic Webster Hall in New York City on November 18.

The Last Year, which was the brainchild of lead vocalist Barr and bassist Scott Ensign, is setting the industry on fire with its debut single “Sugar.” Under the direction of CO 5 Music, the smash hit is currently being spun at more than 14 radio stations, including WWDC 101, WLUM, KWSS, WWWX and many more, across the U.S. and is continuously being added to alternative and rock stations with each and every performance.

No strangers to the stage, Barr, Ensign and drummer BJ Kerwin have toured over 30 countries on three continents. In fact, they have performed 12 international tours for the Armed Forces Entertainment in five years performing for the Troops in the Middle East, Japan, UK, and many other countries throughout Europe and Southeast Asia.
“The support tour with Neon Hitch is the perfect opportunity to further promote the group’s self-titled, new CD, which they teamed up with Shanachie Entertainment to release, and their single “Sugar,” said Mike Marucci, of Marucci Artists Management.

Thanks to Barr’s energizing stage presence and coy airy vocals that she expertly transforms into melodic rock rhythms, she amasses a following wherever she goes. Complemented by Griffith’s “Edge-like” guitar playing, Kerwin’s diverse drumming style that ranges from thrashing beats to cool, simple tempos, and Ensign’s effortless transitions between beautifully-crafted synth melodies to driving bass lines, The Last Year flawlessly backs Barr up with its perfectly executed performances that only a group that has toured together for so long can do.
Show dates are scheduled to include:

October 24th Ram’s Head Live Baltimore, MD*

October 25th Hebe Music Burlington, NJ*

October 26th The Knitting Factory Brooklyn, NY

October 30th Wilmington, NC

October 31st Chapel Hill, NC

About The Last Year
Hailing from Baltimore, The Last Year is an alternative rock band. The act stems from an idea of front-girl Niki Barr, on vocals, and Scott Ensign, playing bass and synth. The pair, complemented by drummer, BJ Kerwin, and guitarist, Scott Griffith, approach their music with a kaleidoscopic attitude, embracing diverse influences and refusing to give in to conventions. Having toured over 30 countries on three continents, The Last Year is no stranger to the stage. With their impressive light show, guided by Barr’s coy, airy vocals that she expertly transforms into powerful rock melodies, and Ensign’s layers of synth growls, the show is a spectacle and a must-see.

The Last Year recently teamed up with Shanachie Entertainment in order to release a brand-new EP of new material. Describing the new release as “limitless” with “everything from buzz saw synth to airy atmospheric ambience to 80s drum sequence loops”, the group says that their latest songs come from the dark place Barr is almost known for and showcase the band’s perfect blend of natural and synthetic sounds.

The Last Year’s EP has been warmly received by fans and critics alike, especially lead single “Sugar”, a tune that bridges the gap between the darkness of Joy Division and the infectious, radio-friendly indie rock hooks of bands like The Temper Trap; spicing it all up with female leading vocals that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Garbage record. “Sugar” is currently receiving spins on HFS 97.5 Baltimore’s Rock Alternative, Baltimore’s 98 Rock, 98.7 WTMD, Phoenix’s KWSS 93.9, and SiriusXM’s Alt Nation. The band has shared the stage with such bands as Ben Kenney, Paramore, Tove Lo, Phantogram, Somekindawonderful, Nicovega, and The Cult.

We Won’t Stop

os

I’m pretty sure we all feel the same way right now. Sad. Pissed. Disappointed. After an O’mazing season the Orioles have had, I wouldn’t expect anything less.

The last time the Orioles were in the ALCS, I was 8 years old. That’s a hell of a long time waiting for ALCS baseball in Baltimore. We had a taste of it two years ago, when the O’s won the Wildcard game and faced off against the Yankees in the ALDS. We thought this city went nuts then? Ngata chance.

On September 16th, the Orioles did something they haven’t done in a very long time..clinch the A.L. East. Baltimore went absolutely bonkers that evening. Camden Yards roared for a good hour after the game; Twitter locally was on fire; and Orioles postseason gear was already flying off shelves.

This past month in Baltimore has been absolutely orange..and incredible. Baltimore City Hall, the Natty Boh Tower, Ravens Stadium, JHU..all lit up in orange. Seas of orange and black seen around the state, and not just on game days.  I haven’t seen support like that since the Ravens won the AFC Championship. Everywhere you go, anyone you meet..they were talking about Dem O’s. Even Lawrence Gillilard from “The Wire” chatted with me about the Orioles when I met him at Monster Mania. That’s probably the LAST place I would expect to talk about the Orioles!

When I think about this season, I’ll choose to think about the amazing moments, not the season ending sweep. Delmon Young clearing the bases in Game 2 of the ALDS = Orioles Magic at its finest. Or the Orioles 60th celebration at Camden Yards, featuring former and current players side by side. I don’t think anyone can watch that ceremony and not get goosebumps.

It’s amazing how the Orioles and the Ravens can bring this town together. And we need that. Every ounce of it. Buck and his team..are special. There’s no other words to describe them at this point.

Onwards to 2015, O’s fans. Take some shots, get some rest..because I have a feeling next season…

..We Won’t Stop.

Monster Mania 2014 Recap

I attended the Monster Mania Convention in Hunt Valley last weekend. I met some great vendors and some great celebrities!

We arrived and got our tickets right away. The person I was with had a Dunkin Donuts Ravens cup..one of the owners of the convention remarked “Oh you have Ravens cups down here? We only get Eagles up where we live.” Sad face. Heh.

We make our way down to the vendors room. If you love horror movies, sci-fi, fantasy..you will LOVE this room.  And most likely go broke. One of the vendors we visited was JP Hobbies. They came all the way from New Jersey.

“This is my sixth Monster Mania show…The experience is like no other, it’s rewarding to interact with customers and even some of the actors. Dave and his staff really do a great job supporting the vendors by bringing in some of the best people in the business. There seems to be more and more people coming to every show”, said Jason Polito.

One of the new vendors I visited was Chroma Coma. Andrew Sheppard is from South Carolina..yes..South Carolina. Here’s a preview of his pastel work:

We walked away with some cool pastels

On to the celebrities!

We go back upstairs to “The Walking Dead” room.

I immediately went to Emily Kinney, who plays Beth on the hit AMC drama. She was nice..ish. Maybe it was nerves? She wanted $70 for an autographed pic and a posed pic combined. Wasn’t happening. So I opted for the posed pic!

Next I saw my boy, Scott Wilson!

D’angelo Barksdale, everyone!

Of course, everyone from Baltimore knows him from “The Wire.” We chatted about that for a few, then he brought up the Orioles. Seriously! They had just won Game 2 of the ALDS..he might be a fan! He took out his cell phone, and took a selfie with me. Seriously.

I then went to the “Halloween 6” reunion part of the convention.

I met Mariah O’Brien, who played Beth in the film. Her favorite memories from filming was having to tell the producers to change her costume in a scene, because it was literally like a table on her. Her other favorite memory was them having to shovel snow, since they were filming in Utah!

image(23)

I also met Devin Gardner, who played Danny. His favorite scene was when he had to hold the knife up to his grandfathers chest. Yikes. Cool kid!

image(24)

The cool thing I noticed about this section of the convention, was that all the “Halloween 6” cast were always together and chatting. Reminiscing. They probably hadn’t seen each other in a very long time!

My last stop was to the beautiful Amanda Wyss. She played Tina in the original “A Nightmare On Elm Street.”

I asked about her experience in the body bag in the film. It was..quite hot apparently. I also asked her about experience on the WB show, “Charmed.” She appeared in one episode, and was supposed to recur, but it never happened. It’s still one of her favorite shows apparently. She’s “just a dream!”

Seriously, if you’re a fan of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films and TV shows, you MUST go to Monster Mania next October in Hunt Valley. The three day event also includes Q&A’s and film screenings!

See you next October guys and ghouls!
