Q&A: Allison Iraheta

I chatted with Allison Iraheta about her passion for music, her stint on “American Idol”, and her upcoming performance with Halo Circus in Baltimore.

Q: Where did you grow up?

I grew up in South Central, Los Angeles. I did the show “Quinceanera” on Telemundo when I was 14. We moved to Mexico during that time. When I returned, that’s when I auditioned for “American Idol.”

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a singer?

Since I can remember. My mother tells me stories that I would sing at her job in a hospital cafeteria. People would ask “Who’s child is this?!” as I was walking around performing.

Q: What is your favorite part of performing live?

It’s funny, I really enjoy smaller crowds. I love the intimacy of that. I still get nervous. I LOVE that feeling though. I hope that never goes away. I love connecting with the fans, but also with band. I freakin’ love getting on stage with them every night.

Q: If you could describe your journey on “American Idol” in one word, what it would be and why?

Crazy. ::laughs:: I didn’t want to say it because it’s the most obvious thing to say. But it’s the absolute truth. If I had to describe to someone who had never heard of the show before,

Q: What makes Halo Circus different from all the other bands out there?

I think it’s the people involved. You have Matthew Hager, who has worked with Scott Weiland, Duran Duran..the list goes on. We shine a light on the not-so-happy parts of life. You have tons of artists sweeping real problems under the rug, just talking about happy go lucky stuff. I have NO problem with that by the way. I just feel like…it’s in our veins to be honest about life in our songs.

Q: How does it feel knowing that your fans help fund this tour?

It’s incredible. We’ll be driving across country and look at each other and go “Holy Shit.” This WOULD NOT be happening without them, what the hell is going on? ::laughs:: The fact that people did this..it makes us want to work harder, play more and louder. It’s great to hug and thank the fans each show. It’s very very special. It’s something we’ll remember forever.

Q: Are you excited about your show here in Baltimore?

Beyond. I think we’ve got some friends coming out to see us actually. By the time we get there, we should have some interesting tweaks added to our show. Should be fun!
