Friz On Film Movie Review: “Irresistible”

“Irresistible”

Starring: Steve Carell, Rose Byrne, Chris Cooper, Mackenzie Davis, Topher Grace, Natasha Lyonne

Directed by: Jon Stewart

Synopsis: From writer/director Jon Stewart comes the comedy of a Democrat political consultant (Carell) who helps a retired Marine colonel (Cooper) run for mayor in a small Wisconsin town.

So we’ve seen these David vs Goliath type films before. But not one with the talent of Steve Carell and Rose Byrne.

Steve Carell and Rose Byrne are your typical political consultants from different sides of the aisle. From someone who has worked on a campaign, and run his own, the films director, Jon Stewart, captures the stereotypes perfectly.

I know what you’re thinking. We’re in the middle of an election, which may decide the soul of this country. Why would I want to see a movie about an election? We’re exhausted, right?

Eh. Maybe. I promise you, “Irresistible” isn’t as daunting as our current political scene. What I loved about the film is that it took a pretty likable average Joe and made him into someone you can rally around. I think we need someone like that in real life at the moment.

I can’t rave enough of about how sensational Rose Byrne is in this.

So I’ll say it again.

Rose Byrne is sensational in this.

Mackenzie Davis gives a subtle, but powerful performance, as does veteran Chris Cooper. Whoever cast this film deserves some kudos. Even Will Sasso and Debra Messing turn up in short but pretty funny roles.

“Irresistible” presents us with a dilemma: Do we allow outside interests continue to flood local elections? Or should politicians be able to take as much money as they want, as long as they have power?

I won’t answer that for you. What I will tell you to do is to kick back, watch this film, and RESIST.

“Irresistible” will be available ON DEMAND and to stream on Friday, June 26th!
